As a prizewinner of the Maria Clara Cullell International Piano Competition, Dr. Jorge Briceño has performed throughout the United States and his native Costa Rica, as well as in Nicaragua, Panama, Brazil, and Germany. He has been a yearly featured artist at the Costa Rica Pianists Symposium since its first edition in 2014.
Dr. Briceño is also an avid chamber musician and collaborative pianist. He has appeared extensively with soprano Abbigail Coté in the Pacific Northwest, performing repertoire that features mostly living composers. In 2015, he co-founded the Ensō duo along with Fanarelia Guerrero, where they have performed several programs that highlight Latin American works for piano duo.
In addition to performing the traditional repertoire Dr. Briceño is committed to performing and teaching works by living composers, women composers, and more prominently, Latin American composers. His doctoral research is an in-depth analysis of the piano sonata in the context of Costa Rican piano music, in which he analyzes sonatas (the oldest from 1965) by six Costa Rican composers, five of whom are still living.
His 2023 season engagements include a recital of Costa Rican music for piano duo with Dr. Manuel Matarrita, as well as conference presentations at the La Frontera International Piano Conference in Texas, and the NCKP in Chicago. Dr. Briceño holds degrees from the University of Costa Rica, Texas State University, and the University of Oregon. He is currently on the faculty at the University of Costa Rica Pre-College Program in Guanacaste and Limón, where he teaches piano and music appreciation.
